Fleet and vehicle service history, per truck
Fleet service history is the record of every service and repair carried out on one vehicle, identified by VIN, plate or fleet unit number. MendTag handles vehicles the same way it handles fixed equipment: every visit filed against that vehicle.
The demo is filmed on equipment, but the vehicle side works the same way.
“What have you done to truck 12?”
A fleet customer asks about one vehicle, by the number painted on its door. The answer is spread across two years of visits, and the person who did most of them is not standing there.
Filing work under the customer gives you everything they own. Filing it under the vehicle gives you the answer to the question they asked.
Four ways to identify the same vehicle
Which one you use depends on who you are talking to. A customer says the unit number, a title says the VIN, a driver says the plate. MendTag holds all of them against one record.
A VIN can only belong to one vehicle in your company — enter a VIN already on file and it takes you to that vehicle rather than creating a second one. One vehicle, one history.
- VIN
- 17-character VINs, checked before they are saved.
- Fleet unit number
- Whatever the customer calls it on the door.
- Licence plate and state
- Held on the vehicle record.
- Year, make, model and trim
- Stored per vehicle.
Read the VIN instead of typing it
Seventeen characters copied off a door frame in bad light is a mistake waiting to happen, and a mistyped VIN is a second vehicle record that splits the history in half.
MendTag reads the VIN off the barcode with the phone camera — from the scan screen, or from inside the form while you are adding the vehicle, so nothing you have already typed is lost. A VIN can then be decoded to fill in the year, make and model rather than entering them by hand.
What a visit records
A job is started against the vehicle, and can carry the reading at that visit — an odometer figure in miles or kilometres, or an hour meter. Each vehicle has a default unit so the right one is offered.
A vehicle belongs to its customer directly rather than sitting at a fixed address, which is how the product handles something that moves. The visit can still record where the work was done.
The write-up
After the work a technician can talk through what they found and what they did instead of writing it out. MendTag transcribes it, they read it back and correct it, and it drafts the report sections from those notes.
The technician edits the draft and approves it. It is not finished until they do, and their own words stay on the job under the report.
Which fleets this suits
It suits mobile mechanics and fleet service work where the same vehicles come back — the history is worth something precisely because you will see that truck again.
MendTag does not do dispatch, scheduling, invoicing, estimates, parts or inventory, and it does not connect to telematics. If you already run a shop system, this is not replacing it. Fleets that have a maintenance system they are happy with probably do not need this; fleets whose history lives on paper are the ones it is for.
